In the world of fine jewelry, few items are as stunning and meaningful as a diamond. Due to their rarity and beauty, mined diamonds have long been the traditional choice for engagement rings, wedding rings and other meaningful gifts. DeVons Jewelers has the expertise and selection to help you choose just the right one for you.
For the best experience, you’ll want to sit down with one of our jewelers so they can show you pieces and explain your options. As always, you’ll be treated with the utmost care and without any pressure at all to make a final decision. Here are some things you’ll want to know before your visit.
How are mined diamonds created?
Carbon, immense heat, pressure and billions of years are Earth’s recipe for diamonds. Those conditions usually only occur deep in the Earth’s crust, which is why mining is typically needed to obtain them. Due to the intense process that creates them, they are the hardest and can handle the most heat of any natural material.
Where are mined diamonds sourced from?
Russia, Botswana, South Africa, Canada and Angola are the main countries from which most mined diamonds are sourced. However, they can be found all over. In fact, visitors to Crater of Diamonds State Park have found diamonds there, the largest being the 3.03 ct. Strawn-Wagner Diamond which was found in 1990 and later cut into a 1.09 ct. gem.

How is a diamond rated?
All diamonds, regardless of their origin, are rated according to the four C’s: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has set the standard for grading diamonds that all jewelers follow.
Cut
A wide variety of cuts are available. Perhaps the most popular is the round brilliant cut due to its classic shape and radiant shine. Its simplicity also lends itself to a variety of settings like this unique 14K White Gold Fancy Halo Round Diamond Engagement Ring.
Other popular cuts include an emerald cut like this exquisite 14K Yellow Gold Emerald Cut Diamond Engagement Ring or an oval cut like this classically elegant Three-Stone White Gold Diamond Engagement Ring. You may also want to consider a princess, marquise, pear, asscher (square version of an emerald cut), radiant (a mix between an emerald and a brilliant-cut) and even a heart-shaped cut.
Color
You might be surprised to learn that diamonds come in colorless (white), blue, yellow, orange, red, green, pink, purple, brown and black. While colorless diamonds will always be favored, black diamonds have also gained popularity.
Clarity
When it comes to diamonds, clarity refers to how clear the diamond is and how many inclusions (an internal flaw) or exclusions (an external flaw) the diamond has. The better the clarity, the more valuable the diamond.
Carat Weight
This simply refers to how big the diamond is and how much it weighs. The larger and heavier the diamond, the more valuable it is.
What is the difference between a mined diamond and a lab-grown diamond?
The only real difference is their origin. Mined diamonds are formed naturally and obtained from the earth, while lab-grown diamonds are created in a lab with machines that recreate the same conditions found on the earth.
They are both diamonds and are certified by GCAL, IGI and GIA and graded to the same standards. They are both insurable and eligible for the DeVons’ Trade-Up and Warranty Programs as well.
